The 2016 Dinner - Dog Days of Summer |

Whenever I climb I am followed by a dog called 'Ego'. Friedrich Nietzsche, 1844-1900
This was the 17th Funi dinner held in Paradise. Lady Gay, Brother Greig and Lady Linda, Brother Perina and Lady Ann, and Brother Flute and Lady Margaret all sent regrets. * * * 27/28 August 2016 Hosts: Mr. & Mrs. GillisToastmaster: Mr. Lemon This was one of our smaller gatherings, and the last at the magnificent Burnbrae estate. Fortunately, there is very little call for an in-house tennis court as the Funis age, and the new Clubhouse will, we are assured, have a pool (although Orcas are getting harder to come by). Around 6:30, the Funis changed into their evening attire and gathered by the pool, in accordance with tradition, for the obligatory group photo and to sample the Hors d'oeuvres. These were prepared and served by Brother Lemon and Lady Patricia, consisting of: goat cheese, pear and proscuitto on bread rounds; almonds, lobster salad, liver & wild porcini mushroom pate served with an assortment of crackers and bread rounds. The hors d'oeuvres were accompanied by the Fish Hoek (f). About 7:10, the participants moved to the dining hall, where seats were allocated by Brother Lemon and Lady Patricia and another group photo was taken. A glass of bubbly (Graham Beck, c) was served for before-meal toasts. Brother Wood presented a toast to David Jones, with additional contributions by Brother Smith, Brother Mitchell and Lady Clare. Brother Smith then gave a toast to Randall Fisher. The first course at table was Soup, prepared by Brother Macleod and served, in his absence, by Brother Lemon and Lady Patricia. This was a cold cucumber & avocado soup with bacon & chive topping. The Brumont (a) was the wine served with this course. The Fish/Fowl course, served by Brother Mitchell and Lady Rachel was Italian-Asian Fusion Oriental Chicken with Egg Noodles, onions, Shiitaki mushrooms & Asian sauce. Wine was the Pfaff (e). The next course was the Salad, prepared and served by Brother Smith and Lady Clare. This had two kinds of lettuce (Buttercrunch and Romaine), radishes, celery, mushrooms, cauliflower, green onion, and carrot with a balsamic oil & vinegar dressing. Brother Wood and Lady Jody served their meat course of Sirloin Steak with Pizzaiola sauce, noodles with parmesan, and mixed Nova Scotia green and yellow beans. The accompanying wine was the Lungarotti (d). Over the meat course, Brother Mitchell regaled the diners with tales of how cretins (could this have been mis-heard by Yr Obdt Servant?) were employed in Tasmania to operate the pumps on pump-organs. The possible verbal mis-interpretations of "pump-organs" will be left to others. The evening concluded with Brother Gillis and Lady Debbie's Maple Pavlova made with maple syrup, with all components locally raised (not from the grocery store): egg whites, Burnbrae blackberries, raspberries, and peaches The bread and cheese assortment (old Canadian cheddar, Canadian Portneuf brie, Saputo Fruilano and Castello Bleu cheese), also provided by Brother Gillis and Lady Debbie, was served concurrently. The dessert and cheeses were served with various liqueurs from the Funi cellar. During dessert, Lady Patricia noted that the paucity of Funis could be largely attributable to dogs: Brother Flute and Lady Margaret had a dog at the end of its life, while Brother Perina and Lady Ann had a puppy just starting out, Lady Linda was injured by a dog. And finally, the evening was capped off with Debbie's
fireworks display in the pool. The following morning, the Funis and Friends assembled at various times to produce and consume breakfast. This included paté, bagels, cream cheese, toast, various condiments, juices, coffee, sliced meats, croissants, muffins, tomatoes, fruits, and cheeses. Many thanks are due to all contributors, organizers and participants. To conclude, appropriate words for the Logotichnicians: iracund, defined as "easily provoked, quick-tempered, irascible", and the Secretariat's obrogate, defined as "to modify or repeal [a law] by passing a new one", both terms to remember in the era of Donald Drumpf. And words of wisdom particularly appropriate to the transition from Obama to the Trump presidency, from the farewell address of Prof. Scott Elledge on the occasion of his retirement from Cornell:
