The 2015 Dinner - Owed to Joy |

All creatures drink of joy Schiller, "Ode to Joy" (Translation) This was the 16th Funi dinner held in Paradise. Lady Gay, along with Brother Mitchell and Lady Rachel, sent regrets. * * * 22/23 August 2015 Hosts: Mr. & Mrs. GillisToastmaster: Mr. Wood I have eschewed the German original, but thought that the concept of the Ode to Joy was appropriate, especially if you think of Burnbrae as "nature's breast" for the Annual Funi Dinner and Weekend Getaway. This year, we were aided in our celebrations by the assistance of Tammy Brooks, whose help was very much appreciated. Around 7:00, the Funis changed into their evening attire and gathered by the pool, in accordance with tradition, for the obligatory group photo. Tradition was then thrown right out the window, as we met in the Kitchen to sample the Hors d'oeuvres. These were prepared and served by Brother Macleod and Lady Linda, consisting of: Cheddar filos; Pears wrapped in arugula & proscuitto; Mini quiche with leek, bacon & cheddar; Ratatouille tarte; Spinach & feta filos; and Cherry tomatoes. The hors d'oeuvres were accompanied by the Jacobs Creek bubbly (a) and the . About 7:30, the participants moved to the dining hall, where seats were allocated by Brother Wood and Lady Jody and another group photo was taken. The first course at table was Soup, prepared by Brother Flute and Lady Margaret. This was Roasted cauliflower bisque (made with leeks rather than potatoes) with gravlax. The Banrock Station (b) was the wine served with this course. The Fish/Fowl course, served by Brother Smith and Lady Clare was Poached scallops with blueberry mayonnaise, accompanied by Brother Lemon and Lady Patricia's Asparagus spears. Wine was the Grillo (c). At this point, Brother Wood called upon Brother Gillis to present a toast to Lady Debbie's parents, who had both passed away within the last year. Brother Macleod also noted the recent accidental death of Elizabeth Jones. The next course was the Salad, prepared and served by Brother Wood and Lady Jody. This was described as a Garden salad comprising various varieties of lettuce & herbs, cherry tomatoes, home-made croutons and an oil & vinegar dressing. The wine served was the Catarratto (d). Brother Wood then called on Brother Macleod to congratulate both Lady Linda and Lady Margaret on their recent retirement. Brother Wood gave birthday greetings to both Lady Clare (59) and Brother Gillis (69). Brother Macleod then made a presentation of the Funi Revelations regarding findings of the Treasurer and made mention of a million dollar missing cheque, presenting photographic evidence showing Brother Lemon, Brother Bagg and Brother Perina making plans to divide up the booty. Brother Gillis and Lady Debbie served their meat course of Rack of lamb and tapenade (sun-dried tomatoes, olives, capers, garlic, olive oil, mint) with Brother Lemon and Lady Patricia's veggies: garlic mashed potatoes and green and yellow beans amandine. The accompanying wines were the Wolf Blass (e) and the Saxonburg (f) Over the meat course, the conversation turned to the Funi legacy of Brother Bagg, and Brother Wood gave the Society's thanks to Brother Gillis and Lady Debbie for all of the marvellous dinners at Burnbrae. Brother Wood also expressed concern regarding the possible degradation of the hearing of various attendees. Brother Macleod proposed the acquisition of an ear trumpet to alleviate the situation. Wine at this point of the evening was the Pierre Amadieu (g) The evening concluded with Brother Perina and Lady Annie's Tiramissou "pick-me-up" (so called because the ladyfingers were soaked in Espresso and Tia Maria before being layered with whipped cream and marscapone). The wine for this course was the Essensia (h), donated by Brother Smith. The bread and cheese assortment, provided by Brother Gillis and Lady Debbie, was served with the Vielle Ferme (i) and the DCW Chardonnay (j) The following morning, the Funis and Friends assembled at various times to produce and consume breakfast. This included a limited quantity of bacon (due to a kitchen mishap), paté, bagels, cream cheese, toast, various condiments, juices, coffee, sliced meats, croissants, muffins, tomatoes, fruits, and cheeses. Many thanks are due to all contributors, organizers and participants. To conclude, appropriate words for the Logotichnicians: sciosophy, defined as "any field claiming to constitute knowledge, but without basis in proven fact" (or, if you prefer, Scientology), and the Secretariat's edacious, defined as "voraciousness, gluttony", something a true Funi would never practice. And words of wisdom particularly appropriate to the Funis from Boswell's "Life of Samuel Johnson":
